Woodcraft Centre Activities Manager

Salary: circa £20k (pro rata)
Hours: 30 hours per week
Reports to: Service Delivery Manager
Location: Alcester St, Digbeth, Birmingham

Job Purpose

Providing support and training to adults with severe mental health issues and/or learning disabilities, through managing and running the Woodcraft Centre on a day-to-day basis, and helping Centre users to develop a wide range of skills to improve their overall wellbeing.

Main duties and responsibilities

Therapeutic support for service users

  • To take overall responsibility for the Woodcraft Centre, providing supervision and support to service users throughout their development.
  • To ensure that up-to-date, person-centred, plans are maintained with the aim of agreeing action plans that support service users to achieve their goals and aspirations for future volunteering, education, training or employment opportunities outside of Better Pathways.
  • To assist service users to improve their overall wellbeing as a result of their experience at the Woodcraft Centre, including self-confidence and social interactions, and other personal, social and life skills.
  • To provide training and motivation to service users to undertake the woodcraft activities, including progression towards a City and Guilds qualification as appropriate.
  • To support with patience and understanding, those service users who experience difficulties in the training and undertaking of woodcraft activities due to mental health conditions and/or learning disabilities.
  • To adopt an asset-based approach that works with each service user’s individual skills and interests.
  • To give service users progressively more responsibility and autonomy to accompany their increasing skills.
  • To take responsibility for the induction of new service users.
  • To liaise with other relevant staff members regarding service users’ progress.
  • To contribute assessments of service users’ progress at review meetings.

Strategic development

  • To take leadership of the Woodcraft Centre’s partnerships programme, including the partnership with Napier University, and to expand this to arrangements with other external organisations, for example, the NHS, Local Authority, colleges and universities.
  • To oversee a step change in the Centre to train more people and to become a self-sustaining social enterprise, and to establish a full work experience programme.
  • To support one of the service users to develop into Second Supervisor, and to line manage this role. This will enable the step change to be carried out.
  • To make sure that the activities of the Woodcraft Centre achieve recognition and exposure among the widest possible segment of the general public.
  • To lead on liaison work with the local community.

Business building

  • To provide quality control of all the products produced by the workshop, to ensure that they meet minimum standards so as to build brand quality.
  • To take online and offline orders from customers, and deliver to the required deadline.
  • To market the products of the craft workshop to as wide an audience as possible, liaising with the Social Media Coordinator and others to do so.
  • To generate referrals to the Woodcraft Centre from other providers with the aim of at least doubling the number of service users who can benefit from the service.


  • To take responsibility for health and safety issues at the Woodcraft Centre.

Person Specification

Essential  Desirable
Experience and high level of skill in woodcraft Understanding of social enterprises
Interest in charity work and in supporting others to reach their potential Qualification in woodcraft, carpentry or a related discipline
Knowledge and/or experience of working with vulnerable adults, and in particular an awareness of mental health conditions and learning disabilities Experience in implementing standard policies (e.g. Health & Safety, Equal Opportunities, Data Protection, etc.)
Experience of managing a team Health and safety qualifications
