Canteen/Kitchen Volunteer

Location: Digbeth, Birmingham

We are looking for canteen/kitchen volunteers to assist with the daily running of the kitchen, making and serving sandwiches and refreshments to our participants and staff.

Who are we?

Better Pathways has been supporting people with poor mental health and with learning disabilities and difficulties to volunteer on our therapeutic work programme since 1963. We have a dedicated, professional team working alongside our 100+ volunteers in a safe, supported space, growing their skills, confidence, and self-esteem, giving them a sense of purpose and achievement and the chance to engage more fully in our communities.

Our social enterprise provides packing, assembly, and light engineering services to businesses in the West Midlands. We are a valued supply chain partner supporting upwards of 30 businesses to deliver high quality end products to their customers.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assisting with basic food preparation activities
  • Preparing food to order
  • Cleaning and sanitising all worksurfaces, tables, etc.
  • Cleaning up the dining area
  • Loading and unloading dishwasher
  • Ensuring there is no shortage of supplies by managing orders and inventory
  • Handling of cash purchases
  • Ability to work as part of a team
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Effective organisational skills
  • Manual dexterity and good hand-eye coordination to pre-helping to clear down counter after service by putting leftovers back into the kitchen
  • Sweeping and mopping kitchen floor and behind service counter

Essential Criteria

  • Must be over 18 years
  • Basic food & hygiene level 2 certificate
  • Used to working with people with Mental Health issues & disabilities
  • Experience in food health and safety regulations
